Commissioner Robert M. Kawahara loves the blues.
He has the legendary singers on compact disc -- Bessie Smith, Mamie Smith and Memphis Mini. But to get a "sense of the time," he prefers to listen to the original cylinder and disc records that he plays on the antique phonographs in his chambers.
"It's real raw, real earthy," Kawahara said of blues music. "It goes to the roots of our country, our heritage."
