VENTURA -- Judge Ryan Wright's toughest day on the job was when his parents' house burned down the same week he was presiding over a murder trial.

His childhood home was one of many lost to the 2018 Thomas Fire. His parents safely escaped.

Wright was sick the night before and woke up to a series of messages.
