Matthias A. Kamber, an attorney with a background in mechanical engineering and a specialization in intellectual property, has joined Paul Hastings LLP as
a partner in San Francisco. He joins from Keker, Van Nest & Peters, where he was a partner in intellectual
property litigation for 17 years. "I was very happy with Keker, Van Nest," he said. "I think I was ready for something new and different. It felt like the platform at Paul Hastings was really strong in terms of their IP group and their overall litigation group. The fact that I can have a bit of a mixed practice was attractive to me." In a case where he represented Google against a space data company called Loon, Kamber used his background in engineering to defend Google. "I remember doing the technical tutorial for the judge in that case," he said. "It was fascinating putting it together. It was this history of ballooning and I had a lot of fun meeting various people who used to work for NASA. ... It was perfect for somebody like me who had studied those types of things as an undergrad." Google reached a confidential settlement in the case.
"I'd say one of the things I enjoy about the practice generally is that every new case is like starting a new class where you get to learn a new technology," he said of his intellectual property work. "It just feels like the job is often being the student, and then turning around and having to become a teacher, to teach a judge, to teach a jury, to help kind of translate the technology."

Blank Rome LLP has expanded its intellectual property and technology group in Los Angeles with an attorney who worked on one of the largest jury verdicts in California.
New partner Todd M. Malynn, transferred from Polsinelli LLP, where he spent five years as a shareholder, because he considers it as a good place to develop his career initiatives.
"California is a hub for a lot of patent litigation," he said. "They were looking for someone with a broad practice to . . . be an asset for them. They have clients in Los Angeles that, with my experience, we can be very useful for."
He represented St. Jude Medical Inc. in a 2011 case against Nervicon Co. Ltd., which was found liable for stealing trade secrets and ordered to pay $2.3 billion. "To my knowledge it was the largest jury verdict in California," he said.
"Todd is a great addition to our IP team on the West Coast, having been involved in cases that resulted in some of the largest jury verdicts for trade secrets and patent infringement in California," partner Dipu A. Doshi, co-chair of Blank Rome's intellectual property and technology group, said in a statement.
Malynn is optimistic about the future for his clients and his career, explaining that he will use the firm's "full array of legal services and make myself available to clients nationwide. It's a great opportunity for me, and it's a great fit for the company and it's real exciting."

A trade-secret case he handled 10 years ago taught him how to work with a case after discovering it. "We managed to salvage a decent result from a bad situation there," Arledge said. prior counsel's plans, and how to deal with the client's expectations, which you had no role in creating.
Arledge said he's excited for the opportunity to try new cases at the firm and has started by representing Atari in a counterfeit trademark infringement lawsuit against an online marketplace company.
He describes himself as a storyteller when trying to persuade a judge or jury. "Telling a compelling story through the lens of someone that doesn't want to help you tell that story" is extremely challenging, but rewarding, he said.
Arledge is the co-author of "To Prove, To Please, To Move: Timeless Principles of Legal Advocacy," which is soon to be published. He teaches trial advocacy and deposition skills in the United States and Europe.
Arledge graduated from USC Gould School of Law.

Biederman said he was drawn to return to Greenberg Traurig because of its international footprint. He was an associate at the firm from 1998 to 1999.
