Giving Hope a Chance
As the child of Israeli intellectuals working in Ethiopia, Daniel Grunfeld lived a fairly privileged life. Still, his parents, a lawyer and a philosophy professor, wanted to imbue in him the understanding that not everyone was so fortunate, so they often took him to visit their Ethiopian servants in their homes. While Grunfeld fondly remembers running footraces and playing capture the flag with the servants' children, he also vividly recalls the huts made of mortar and mud in which they lived.
