California voters sent mixed messages at the ballot box last week regarding one of the state's most controversial environmental issues: hydraulic fracturing, aka "fracking."

Voters in three counties - Santa Barbara, San Benito and Mendocino - went to the polls to decide whether to ban fracking in those jurisdictions. The San Benito and Mendocino measures passed easily, while the Santa Barbara initiative was defeated.
