Keep your options open
I often quote to my students the wisdom of famous legal philosopher Yogi Berra: "When you come to the fork in the road, take it." I believe Yogi meant to caution against making decisions that restrict one's options by, instead, taking all the options possible. A recent case demonstrates the point.
