The action is the first under a new state law that allows state housing officials to refer alleged violators to the attorney general.

The state will sue the city of Huntington Beach over its affordable housing plan, the first action under a new law that authorizes the state housing department to report municipalities to the attorney general's office.

Gov. Gavin Newsom announced Friday morning he approved the lawsuit with a news release accusing the city of "standing in the way of affordable housing production and refusing to meet regional housing needs."
