Proposition 18: Should we allow 17-year-olds to vote in elections?

There’s a sound physiological reason that teens on average are less prudent than adults. The prefrontal cortex governing behavior and impulse control doesn’t finish baking until roughly the age of 25.

As a formerly young person who has always enjoyed voting, I have some sympathy for any 17-year-old who wants to get in on the action. But this would not be a good idea.

Proposition 18, which is on California’s November 3 ballot, would permit a person to vote in a primary or special election if he or she would turn eighteen before the next general election.
