‘Darrow’s Nightmare: Los Angeles 1911-1913,’ by Nelson Johnson
In a new book, “Darrow’s Nightmare: Los Angeles 1911-1913,” Nelson Johnson uses trial transcripts, newspaper accounts and other sources to present a fast-moving account of the no-winners courtroom drama of the trial of the defendants in the Los Angeles Times Building bombing case.

Michael L. Stern
Judge (ret.)
Harvard Law, Boalt Hall
Judge Stern worked at the CRLA Santa Maria office from 1972 to 1975. He is chair of the Los Angeles County Superior Court Historical Committee.

At 1:18 a.m., on October 1, 1910, a tremendous explosion rocked the downtown Los Angeles Times Building, igniting a horrific fire that killed 21 workers. Dynamite had been planted where the flammable printing ink was stored, multiplying the lethal force of the blast. People jumped from upper floors to avoid the raging flames, some falling to their deaths.
It was the ugliest single criminal act that Los Angeles had ever witnessed.
