“Berkeley” denoted Bishop George Berkeley, a prominent Irish philosopher. I had only a passing acquaintance with 18th century philosophy, but I was aware of the brilliant Bishop’s dark side: a fondness for slavery.

In 2020, the powers-that-be at my law school alma mater canceled the name their forebears had told me to call the institution: “Boalt Hall”.
The reason? Some obscure academic had uncovered where the “Boalt” came from.
