Girardi has progressive dementia, doctor tells competency hearing
Defending against assertions by federal prosecutors that Tom Girardi is exaggerating cognitive decline to avoid trial, one of his federal public defenders, J. Alejandro Barrientos, asked if someone with Mild Cognitive Impairment would be able to work. “Often,” she responded. “If there’s a support system.”




Disbarred plaintiffs’ lawyer Tom Girardi’s cognitive impairment worsened when his wife left him and his law firm collapsed, two doctors testified Tuesday in a hearing to determine his competence to stand trial on charges of bilking $15 million from his clients.
However, one of the doctors later testified that Girardi did not remember his wife, his daughters’ names, or that his law firm no longer existed in 2023.
