Newsom vetoes some 80 bills, cites increased costs, court clogging

Gov. Gavin Newsom rejected a bill requiring judges to automatically review bail decisions they had already made and one to fund a pilot program to help jail inmates in three counties vote.

Gov. Gavin Newsom rejected some 80 bills in actions announced Friday and Sunday -- often citing high costs amid the state's ongoing budget shortfall. These include several measures aimed at helping people accused of crimes.

For instance, Newsom vetoed AB 544, which would have created a pilot program to help jail inmates vote in San Benito, San Mateo and Santa Cruz counties. The bill would have appropriated funds for voting support in these counties and required sheriff's ...
