Life is short and sports careers are even shorter. Reports and analyses by various media outlets, such as ESPN and NBC Sports, estimate the average professional player's career length is around 4.5 years for the NBA and 3.3 years for the NFL. Those estimates are significantly lower than they were nearly a decade ago, and are attributable to various drivers, from increased awareness of long-term health risks to broader, stiffer competition.
