Ex-chief justice predicts law profession-wide brain drain

The average active attorney in California is 50, according to demographic statistics from the State Bar. A March bar study found "the number of inactive California attorneys has increased by 38% over the last 10 years, reaching over 71,000 in 2023."

Then-California Chief Justice Tani G. Cantil-Sakauye accurately warned of an impending "wave of retirements" among judges three years ago. On Friday, she foretold a coming "brain drain" that could affect the wider legal profession and overall economy.
