Judge issues injunction against Oakland airport name change

While the name change wasn't intentionally deceptive, it would likely cause harm to San Francisco International Airport's brand, U.S. Magistrate Judge Thomas S. Hixson ruled.

A magistrate judge granted the City and County of San Francisco's request for a preliminary injunction barring the Port of Oakland from using the name "San Francisco Bay Area Oakland International Airport."

He found that the port had taken a valuable mark and applied it to a "smaller, less successful, and lower rated airport" in a manner that was likely to imply affiliation.
