5 hospitals sue health insurer over alleged underpayments

Attorneys for the hospitals claim Molina Healthcare's payments were not "reasonable and customary," the standard applied when calculating out of contract costs for patient care.

Five hospitals in Southern California accused Molina Healthcare Inc. of underpaying them tens of millions of dollars for emergency department care they furnished to the insurer's clients.

The lawsuit in Los Angeles County Superior Court asserts breach of implied-in-law contract and seeks declaratory relief.
