Mandatory e-filing reinstated at LA Courts

The requirement will resume Thursday for CARE Court, Civil, Family Law, Juvenile Dependency and Probate cases.

The Los Angeles County Superior Court's mandatory electronic filing requirement will resume Thursday for CARE Court, Civil, Family Law, Juvenile Dependency and Probate cases.

Self-represented parties can choose to e-file their documents or in person.

The Los Angeles County Superior Court was closed on July 22 as officials sought to repair and restart the court's electronic system following a ransomware attack three days prior. Attorneys were unable to file documents and judges were unable to access their calendars. The court reopened the following day, but most of its electronic systems remained offline. Remote appearances were not possible, and some internal telephone lines remained down. Some attorneys printed pleadings that they had submitted electronically and had them delivered to court.

Court officials announced Monday that they had restored all public-facing and internal network systems.

Officials have said very little publicly about the ransomware attack that forced the nation's largest trial court system to close. A statement from the court said that a ransomware attack began July 19, which coincided with the global CrowdStrike outage. However, a court employee said on Tuesday that the court's system went down on July 18.
