MONTEREY PARK - Stephen C. Marpet was a dependency court referee in early 2006 when a case before him led to reverberations throughout California's home schooling community.

Amid allegations of abuse and neglect, counsel for a Lynwood couple's youngest children sought a court order requiring the parents to send the children to public or private school rather than home school them.
