REDWOOD CITY - San Mateo County Superior Court Judge Beth Labson Freeman's chambers felt overheated on a sweltering July morning, but the judge said the poor air conditioning works for her when she holds conferences with lawyers in the room.

"I've learned to live with it, and people come in here and soon they're all sweaty," she said. "It puts me at an advantage."
