Sacramento Superior Court Judge Renuka George's path to the law began with a wedding -- or rather, 50 of them.

In February 2004, she was working as a policy analyst in the administration of San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom when he directed the city-county clerk to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples, directly challenging state law. George was in the room when Newsom, just a month into his first term, performed the marriage of Del Martin and Phyllis Lyon.
