SAN RAFAEL - Paul M. Haakenson started his career in a laboratory at a biotechnology company in San Ramon.

For two years, he worked as a research biologist in immunohistology, making kits to help identify cells, including cancerous cells, and other biological materials. But it wasn't the career he wanted, so, on the recommendation of a friend, he traded his white lab coat for law books.
