Chess Chambers

A high-ranking teenage chess player in Oregon, Superior Court Commissioner David M. Hirsch still makes deft moves in his Ventura courtroom. Before taking the bench, he worked as both a prosecutor and defense attorney.

VENTURA - Superior Court Commissioner David M. Hirsch studies the board in his chambers. Carefully, he moves a rook to bishop 3. Then he slaps a sticky note on the other side of the board:

"Your move."

Some time later, Erin Cogburn-Spence, a veteran court reporter, peeks her head inside Hirsch's open chambers. No one's there. She heads for the chess board and makes her move.
